ParkSyde Learning is home-education support for Australian families, written to the Australian Curriculum. Choose the year your learner is in: the first lesson of each learning area is open to try, in full, with no account.
A plan opens every lesson in your learner's year: from $9.99 a week at the founding rates while the first hundred places remain, and from $14.99 a week after they are gone, GST included. A family's first plan starts with a week to try it, and nothing is charged until day 8. See the plans
Lesson 1 of 4 · Light Detectives: Shadows, Mirrors and Bending Beams
Straight Shooters: How Light Travels (and the Ghost Coin)
Today's open lesson: Year 5 Science, in full, the same one a plan opens. Watch it step by step, then explore it yourself. The calendar turns it — another day, another real lesson.
A kitchen seen from just behind your shoulder: the bench running away from you to the window, the mango on the far end, the two straight lines of light that put it in your eye, and a cereal box drawn in one place where it blocks them and one where it does not.
We are in a kitchen with the morning sun coming in the window, a mango on the bench and you at this end — and every question in this example is about the straight lines between them.
Slide the box along the bench and find the spot where the mango comes back — then look at how far the line has dropped there.
By the box's far corner the line has dropped 21.5 of the 30 it needs to reach the top of the box — the mango is still there.
