Explicit instruction first
New ideas are taught clearly, in small steps, with worked examples — the 'I do' of every lesson. Decades of research (Rosenshine's principles, the worked-example effect) show novices learn far more from clear models than from being left to figure it out cold.
Scaffolds that fade (Vygotsky)
Learning happens in the Zone of Proximal Development — the space between what a child can do alone and what they can do with help. Our guided practice offers hints on demand and worked solutions, and the support deliberately fades as competence grows.
Development-matched design (Piaget)
An eight-year-old reasons concretely; a fifteen-year-old can reason abstractly. Our five developmental bands change how content is presented — concrete materials before pictures before symbols in primary, hypothesis and abstraction in secondary.
Visible learning (Hattie)
Every lesson opens with a learning intention and success criteria, gives instant feedback on checks for understanding, and closes with student self-assessment — practices at the top of the effect-size research on what actually moves learning.
Exploration with a foundation
Curiosity matters — but discovery works best after teaching, not instead of it. Every lesson ends with guided exploration and real choice, so children apply new ideas their own way, on a foundation strong enough to explore from.
Universal Design for Learning
Multiple means of engagement (real-world hooks, choice), representation (text, visuals, tables, listen-aloud on every phase) and expression (write it, build it, record it, perform it). Adjustable text size, reading-support font, high contrast and calm motion are built into the platform itself.
Many ways to be smart
Drawing on Gardner's multiple intelligences, every learner builds a strengths profile — word, number, picture, music, body, people, self and nature smart. Strengths guide which tasks we suggest first, so children meet new ideas through what they're already great at. The success criteria never change — only the doorway in.
Art as a learning superpower
Arts integration is one of the best-evidenced routes to engagement and memory: drawing to understand, drama to inhabit history, music to hold sequences, exhibition to make learning public. Arts-based options are flagged in every unit — they are rigorous assessment, not decoration.
No learning without purpose
Every unit opens with an honest answer to 'why are we learning this?', and lessons adapt their examples to where your child actually lives — their state, their town, their weather, their Country. Purpose is the engine of motivation; relevance is how you build it.
Real humans when you need them
Learning is social — Vygotsky put the 'more knowledgeable other' at the centre of development. Alongside the parent/carer, every subscription includes a professional consultation each term with a registered teacher, counsellor or psychologist through the Support Hub.

Who built this
ParkSyde Education wasn't assembled from a content library. It was designed by people who have spent their working lives inside classrooms, clinics and the systems around them — led by one belief: everyone can learn.

How we grow readers: the Four Resources Model
Our literacy program is built on Freebody and Luke's Four Resources Model: a capable reader is a code breaker, a meaning maker, a text user and a text analyst — all four, from the very first years.
Code Breaker
"How do I crack this text's code?"
- Phonemic awareness and systematic synthetic phonics
- Spelling patterns and morphology (prefixes, suffixes, word families)
- Fluency: accuracy, rate and expression
- Handwriting and keyboarding
In ParkSyde: Early Years units are phonics-first; word-level work (noun groups, vocabulary, editing) runs through every English unit; the Reading Diagnostic's 'Decoding & word knowledge' strand tracks it.
Meaning Maker
"What does this text mean — to the author, and to me?"
- Vocabulary breadth and depth
