🎯 Today's mission briefing
We are learning to find out which group has more, which thing is longer and which thing is heavier — by matching and lining up, instead of guessing from a distance.
You'll know you've got it when:
- I can pair things up one for one to show which group has more, less, or the same
- I can line up the starts of two things before I say which one is longer
- I can hold one thing in each hand to find out which is heavier, instead of guessing by how big it looks
The Great Sultana Argument
Connects to what your guest already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.
Helper, read aloud and perform: Uh oh. I've made two piles of sultanas — one for you and one for me. (Make YOUR pile 6 sultanas pushed close together, and THEIR pile 8 sultanas spread out in a long line.) Hang on... look at yours, all stretched out down the table. Look at mine, all squished up. Somebody has been treated unfairly here and I want to know who! Now — before you say anything — here's the rule of this whole unit: we are NOT going to decide by looking. Looking gets fooled. We are going to find out for sure.
