We are learning that everyday things are made by people, and we can work out how they work by looking closely — what pushes, what turns, what opens.
You'll know you've got it when:
- I can show how an object works using doing-words like push, turn, pull, squeeze and open
- I can point to a part of an object and say what its job is
- I can say that a person made it and designed it to do a job
The Museum of Amazing Ordinary Things
Connects to what your guest already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.
Helper, read aloud, then put the screen down: Welcome to the world's smallest museum — and it's in OUR house! (Set out 4 or 5 everyday objects on a tea towel like precious treasures: a soap-pump bottle, a peg, a whisk or salad spinner, a torch, a stapler with no staples.) These look ordinary... but every one of them is a little machine, invented by a person, with secret moving parts. Today you're not just looking — you're the Museum Investigator, and your job is to work out what makes each one GO.
