The Cranky 3000: Recipes for Robots
π― Today's mission briefing
We are learning that a robot follows steps EXACTLY as they are said β so instructions must be precise, in order, and tested by following them.
You'll know you've got it when:
- I can give a robot steps that are small, clear and in the right order
- I can test my steps by watching the robot follow them exactly β and spot where things go wrong
- I can find the step with the mistake (the bug!) and fix just that step, like a detective
A Robot Moves In
Connects to what your guest already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.
Helper, read aloud β then transform: Terrible news. Or maybe WONDERFUL news. This morning I was zapped by a mysterious ray and now, whenever someone says 'ROBOT ON', I turn into... the CRANKY 3000. (Stiff arms. Blank face. Beep boop.) The Cranky 3000 is not naughty β it's just a robot, and robots do ONLY what the steps say. Nothing more. Nothing less. No guessing, no helping, no 'you know what I mean'. Try it: say 'robot on' and ask me to make you some fairy bread. (Child asks. Robot stands utterly still, then:) BEEP. ERROR. NO STEPS RECEIVED. ...See the problem? The Cranky 3000 is ready to work β but somebody is going to have to feed it steps. Perfect ones.
