We are learning how Unit 3 turns a personal focus into a genuine inquiry — sharpening the focus until it can drive a body of work, interrogating it through the four contexts, and choosing a media approach that serves it.
You'll know you've got it when:
- I can state a personal focus precisely enough that it excludes things — and explain the difference between a focus and a theme
- I can run a focus, or another artist's work, through the contemporary, personal, cultural and formal contexts and say what each lens reveals
- I can propose a media approach that serves my focus, is workable in my home studio, and names its safety requirements up front
Nobody good starts with a blank canvas
Connects to what your guest already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.
The blank canvas is the most misleading image in art education, because no serious artist starts there. They start with an obsession. Patricia Piccinini has spent decades circling the same questions about care, technology and the creatures we make — her hyperreal silicone beings are one long inquiry wearing different bodies. Fiona Hall has spent a career transforming charged materials — sardine tins, shredded banknotes, soap — into objects that argue about money, nature and empire; when she represented Australia at the Venice Biennale in 2015, the pavilion was that obsession made walkable. Emily Kam Kngwarray, the Anmatyerr artist whose 2023 retrospective filled the National Gallery of Australia, painted her Country and its cycles across batik and then canvas for decades — one deep focus, thousands of works. Notice the pattern: the focus came first, and the artworks are what the focus produced when it was pressed hard enough. Unit 3 is built on exactly this behaviour. You are not being asked to make eight good pictures this year. You are being asked to find the thing you cannot stop thinking about, and press it until it makes work. Today is about finding it and sharpening it — because a blurry focus makes blurry art, and this is the year that stops being a private problem and starts being an assessed one.
