Reading Like a Storyteller
🎯 Today's mission briefing
We are learning to read aloud with phrasing and expression, using punctuation as road signs for our voice.
You'll know you've got it when:
- I can say what my voice should do at a full stop, a comma, a question mark and an exclamation mark
- I can read a sentence in phrases (small groups of words) instead of word... by... word
- I can reread a sentence in a better way after I hear myself and think 'that didn't sound like talking'
Robot voice vs storyteller voice
Connects to what your guest already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.
Read this out loud in your best ROBOT voice — every word flat and the same: 'The. Old. Wombat. Dug. A. Tunnel. Under. The. Fence.' Now read it again like you're telling your best friend some AMAZING news: 'The old wombat... dug a tunnel... UNDER THE FENCE!' Same words. Totally different feeling! You already know how to talk like a storyteller — you do it every day. Today you learn to READ like one too.
