- I can build a three-digit number and say it correctly
- I can tell you what each digit in a three-digit number is worth
The great pasta count
Connects to what your guest already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.
Tip a big pile of dried pasta on the table — a couple of handfuls. Now, how many pieces are there? You COULD count them one by one... but if you lose count at 67, you have to start again. Ouch. Mathematicians got sick of that hundreds of years ago and invented a trick: bundling. Today you learn their trick, and counting big piles becomes easy.
