We are learning to find and use the three stages of a narrative: orientation, complication and resolution.
You'll know you've got it when:
- I can name the three stages of a narrative and say what each one does
- I can find the orientation, complication and resolution in a story I read or hear
- I can invent a complication that gives a story a real problem to solve
The story with no problem
Connects to what your child already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.
Listen to this 'story': 'On Saturday I went to the beach. The sun was out. We had lunch. Then we went home.' ...Did you almost fall asleep? Nothing HAPPENED. Now compare: 'On Saturday I went to the beach — and halfway through lunch, a seagull the size of a chook stole Dad's entire sausage roll.' Suddenly you want to know what happens next! Today you'll find out exactly what the second story has that the first one doesn't.
