We are learning to say Japanese greetings accurately by mastering the five Japanese vowel sounds and Japanese's even, equal-beat rhythm.
You'll know you've got it when:
- I can say the five Japanese vowels a-i-u-e-o in order and give the English sound each one matches
- I can clap the beats in a Japanese word and explain why every beat gets the same amount of time
- I can greet someone with ohayō gozaimasu, konnichiwa, konbanwa or sayōnara and say which time of day each one belongs to

Every single one of those is a Japanese word that Australians use without blinking — and we say almost all of them wrong. Take karaoke. We say 'carry-okey', like it's a cousin of hockey.
