Same Slice, Different Name
๐ฏ Today's mission briefing
We are learning that one fraction can wear many names, and to use multiplication and division to rename fractions without changing their size.
You'll know you've got it when:
- I can show with a picture or paper folding why two fractions like 1/2 and 2/4 are the same amount
- I can make equivalent fractions by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number
- I can simplify a fraction by dividing top and bottom by the same number, and explain why the amount doesn't change
The chocolate block argument
Connects to what your guest already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.
Two kids, one chocolate block. Mia breaks hers in half and eats 1 of the 2 pieces. Leo breaks his (identical) block into quarters and eats 2 of the 4 pieces. Leo announces he ate more โ 'two pieces beats one piece!' Mia says they ate exactly the same. Someone here is about to be very wrong about chocolate. Who?
