Complete the Loop: How Circuits Move Energy

🎯 Today's mission briefing

We are learning to build and draw a complete circuit, and to explain that a circuit transfers energy from a cell and transforms it into light, heat, sound and movement β€” rather than 'using electricity up'.

You'll know you've got it when:

  • I can build a working circuit from a single AA cell, foil or wire, and a globe, and explain why the loop must be complete
  • I can draw a labelled circuit diagram and use the words cell, conductor, insulator, switch and circuit correctly
  • I can explain where the energy comes from, where it goes, and why the charge itself is not used up on the way round
  • I can name and follow the mains-power safety rules for every electricity investigation

The torch that only works when you squeeze it

Connects to what your guest already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.

Storm season, somewhere in south-east Queensland. The power goes out, you find the old torch in the third drawer down, and it flickers β€” on, off, on β€” but only when you squeeze the middle of the barrel just right. Everything inside it still exists: the batteries are fine, the globe is fine, the switch is fine. Nothing is broken. And yet the light will not stay on. Squeeze, light. Let go, dark. What exactly does squeezing that barrel FIX? Answer that properly and you have understood the single most important idea about electricity β€” the one that runs every device you own.

Nothing inside is broken, and yet no light. The problem is not a part. The problem is a loop.
