Four Rooms: The Studio Sampler and Your Election

We are learning to sample four art forms through short genuine briefs, to notice what each form is actually made of, and to elect a major and a minor on evidence rather than on a hunch about talent.
You'll know you've got it when:
- I can complete a short brief in each of the four rooms and describe, in that form's own vocabulary, what the work is made of
- I can apply the three election tests — pull, friction, curiosity — to my own sampler evidence instead of choosing what I am already best at
- I can name one professional Australian practitioner in my elected form and one thing their publicly documented practice tells me about the work
Four doors, and a term to spend
Connects to what your guest already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.
Every year, in the same building in Sydney, hundreds of painters send in a portrait and wait. The Archibald Prize has run since 1921, the Art Gallery of New South Wales hangs the finalists, and the whole country argues about them for a month. Down the road, an orchestra rehearses a piece for the fourth day running because the second movement still is not breathing. In Brisbane, an animation studio holds a review where a seven-minute episode is picked apart shot by shot. In a rehearsal room somewhere tonight, an actor is running the same forty seconds of a scene for the eleventh time, and it is finally starting to land. None of these people are doing a bit of everything. They chose a room, years ago, and went deep — and here is the part that surprises people: almost none of them chose the room they were already best at when they were twelve. They chose the room whose problems they wanted to spend their life on. You have four rooms and one lesson. Today you go into all four, make something small and real in each, and then choose — properly, on evidence — the form you will deepen for the rest of this unit, and the one you will keep alive beside it. This is not a test you can fail. It is an election, and you are the only voter.
