What Makes a Place Healthy: Access, Environment and Connection

🎯 Today's mission briefing

You are learning to explain how the place you live shapes the health of everyone in it, and to audit your own community's health assets and gaps with real evidence you collected yourself.

You'll know you've got it when:

  • I can explain what social determinants of health are and give a local example of each of access, environment and connection
  • I can explain the difference between health equality and health equity, and say why the distinction matters for a real person in my town
  • I can conduct a health-asset audit on foot, recording what my community actually has as well as what it lacks
  • I can identify one realistic gap in my community and propose an action that a group of ordinary people could actually take

Two postcodes, twenty minutes apart, nine years of life

Connects to what your guest already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.

Here is a fact that should be more famous than it is. In most Australian cities you can drive twenty minutes and cross a gap of several years in average life expectancy, and in some parts of the country the gap between the healthiest and least healthy areas is closer to a decade. Nobody in either postcode chose to be born there. The people are not more or less disciplined, more or less deserving, or more or less interested in living a long time. So what is doing it? Look at the two places instead of the two groups of people. Is there a GP who bulk bills, and can you get an appointment inside a fortnight? Is there shade on the walk to the shops, or is it four hundred metres of bare footpath in thirty-four degrees? Is there a footpath at all? Is there a bus, and does it run when people actually need it? Is there a place where people who are not related to each other end up standing next to each other β€” a club, a court, a library, a pool, a neighbourhood centre, a community garden, a men's shed? Health is not manufactured inside one body by willpower. It is largely produced by the place, and places can be changed. That is the good news in this entire lesson.

Same city, same country, same era. Different footpaths, different clinics, different clubs β€” and a measurable difference in how long people live.
