Year 5

Reasoning, argument and project depth

How we teach in the Upper Primary band — and why

The developing mind (Piaget)

Consolidated concrete operational thought with the first steps toward abstraction: proportional reasoning, variables as 'unknowns', cause-and-effect chains in science and history.

Learning together (Vygotsky)

Learners take more of the regulating role themselves: checklists, self-questioning prompts and peer/parent teach-back replace some adult scaffolds. Hints shift from 'here's the step' to 'which strategy could help?'

Our design commitments

  • Growing learner agency: choice of project formats and inquiry angles
  • Metacognitive routines — plan, monitor, review — made explicit
  • Extended writing and multi-step problem solving with fading scaffolds
  • Explicit study skills: retrieval practice, spacing, summarising

Programmed scope
