Year 9

Complexity and choice

How we teach in the Middle Years band — and why

The developing mind (Piaget)

Emerging formal operational thought: hypothetical reasoning, abstraction, systematic testing of ideas. Abstract notation and models are introduced deliberately, still bridged from concrete cases.

Learning together (Vygotsky)

The ZPD widens with motivation: scaffolds are available on demand rather than default. Disciplinary thinking — like a mathematician, scientist, historian — is modelled explicitly before being handed over.

Our design commitments

  • Subject-specialist depth with explicit disciplinary literacy
  • Argumentation and evidence: claim–evidence–reasoning across subjects
  • Longer inquiry cycles bookended by explicit instruction and structured reflection
  • Purpose and relevance foregrounded to sustain adolescent engagement

Programmed scope

  • English

Literary analysis, rhetoric, representation in media

  • Mathematics
