Painting with Noun Groups
🎯 What we're learning today
We are learning to build noun groups with well-chosen adjectives so readers can see our characters and settings.
You'll know you've got it when:
- I can build a noun group from an article, adjectives and a noun (like 'the rusty, abandoned tractor')
- I can improve a plain sentence so it puts a clear picture in the reader's head
- I can choose my two BEST describing words instead of piling on lots of weak ones
The invisible dog
Connects to what your child already knows and makes them curious. Activating prior knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of new learning.
Close your eyes while your helper reads this: 'The dog ran.' What did you see? Big dog? Small dog? What colour? You can't tell — the dog is basically invisible! Now try: 'The muddy, three-legged cattle dog ran.' Suddenly there he is — you can practically smell him. Same dog. Different words. Today you learn to make readers SEE.
